Changeling (2008)

Changeling (2008) Poster

I was a little worried when I first picked up a movie directed by Clint Eastwood, especially one that promised huge emotional turmoil. I have never truly been convinced of his acting ability and in my opinion he isn't successful in stirring up emotions within his audience. Having said this, as someone who isn't Eastwood's biggest fan I was pleasantly surprised by 'Changeling'. This is the first film directed by Eastwood that I remember ever having seen.

For those who love crime, psychology or gender equality, especially based in a historical context, this is the film for you. The story follows a woman's struggle to prove her case against overwhelming odds. It is about a mother who never gives up on finding her son, even when everyone tries to convince her that she has already found him.

The plot of the film was a wonderful concoction combining elements of 1920s corruption, persecution of women, and a hint of media influences on the 'truth'. Many scenes were reminiscent of the book 'Mad, Bad and Sad' by Lisa Appignanesi, a book that explores the understanding of our minds over the last 200 years. Within this book it speaks of the views on woman's psyches, and how men were able to place their wives or daughters into mental care on a whim. These are just some of the things explored within 'Changeling'.

The main Character was acted by the high profile Angelina Jolie, who successfully portrayed the helplessness felt by a woman with the world against her. Jeffrey Donovan presented the audience with a realistic antagonist who was very much like the 'bad guys' in all of our lives. With strong conflicting motivations driving both characters, the battle that ensued was interesting. All of the actors within this production were fantastic, and I must give my thanks to those in charge of casting.

Overall, I would recommend this to many, if not all of my friends.
